5 Ways to Improve Your Serve at Home

1. Get the toss down Your toss is the most important part of your serve. It can determine the direction and speed of the ball. Practice tossing the ball about 1-2 feet above your highest reach. When the ball hits the ground, it should land next to your non-dominant foot.

2. Work on contact Contacting the ball is also a very important aspect of serving. You want to make sure that you contact the ball hard and strait to your target. If you struggle with contacting the ball well during your serve, try bouncing the ball and hitting it against the ground, focusing on your contact. You can do this before serving in a game, or you can do multiple reps at home.

3. Strengthen your hand A strong hand is a very important factor of having a strong serve. A few months ago, my coach recommended  a hand strengthener to me, and it has greatly improved my power for both serving and hitting. You can use it in the car, while watching TV, pretty much whenever you want! It is super easy to use, and very beneficial. You can buy it on amazon for only $9.99.

4. Create a serving ritual Every time I go up to serve in a game, I always hit the ball against the floor 3 times, bounce it twice, and then spin it in my hand. Serving rituals should help you focus, but they shouldn't be too long or complex. Some serving ritual steps you could try:

5. Practice! The best thing that you can do to improve your serve is to consistently practice it. You can serve to a partner, against a wall, or serve and chase. Either way, getting in some good reps will definitely make you a more consistent server.
